I made this video to tell the story of my mom’s journey from potter to pastor and ultimately fusing both skills into her liturgical ceramics.

A spiritual path is the journey home to one’s whole self, as seen through the eyes of God. It is seldom a straight path but filled with surprises that we could not have imagined when we started. As we learn to feel God’s hand shaping and responding to our unique selves, we find “home” within us. Seeing the spiritual needs around us invites us to live more deeply, and calls out our gifts to serve others.
This video shows part of my story, as I practice my craft as an artist and as a pastor and find my way to creating pottery for the work of the Church. It is a delight to have collaborated with both my daughter and son in making this video. Julia plays the part of a person that I visited with my first Communion set, and she provided practical assistance with lighting and other details. Micah of Soul Shine Creative Studio is the videographer and co-creator of the video. His expertise and vision makes the work a joy.
Thanks to Renew Church and First Congregational United Church of Christ Eau Claire, WI for graciously allowing us to film in their beautiful sanctuaries. Thanks to Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary for providing photos of the campus where I found community in which to grow. I’m excited to be a sponsor of the Festival of Homiletics 2021. I always enjoy connecting with other pastors in the joyful atmosphere. This video will be shown in between presentations during the virtual festival. How does my story connect to yours? Where are you on your spiritual journey?
